10 Space saving ideas for a small bathroom March 2013

Creating your dream sanctuary can be challenge if you have a small bathroom, but see it as a design opportunity and maximise its potential. Look at it with fresh eyes, plan carefully and pay attention to the detail and your small space will grow into all you dreamed of.

1. Storage is essential in a small room. An organised space has a calming influence, try to incorporate plenty of storage space and use bathroom accessories creatively to stack lovely soft towels and display your toiletries to create a feeling of luxury.

2. Try to free up and open out the floor lines. Wall mounted vanity units and sanitary ware and a frameless glass shower screen or shower enclosure will create the feeling of more space and a larger room. Aqata's Spectra frameless screens and enclosures provide an effective water barrier and create a contemporary luxury wet room style space.

3. Create a bright and airy space using natural light to its full advantage and position bright task lighting and soft mood lighting in key areas.

4. Use reflective surfaces and position a large mirror to reflect the light around the room.

5. Polished chrome bathroom fittings, like thermostatic showers which are both practical and indulgent and bathroom accessories, such as toilet roll holders, towel rings, towel rails, glass shelves and robe hooks etc., all contribute to the feeling of wellbeing, providing a place for those necessary essentials and adding those all-important finishing touches. Aqata's range of bathroom accessories and thermostatic showers are designed with sleek minimal lines in beautiful polished chrome.

6. Choose light neutral colours and textures and a limited palette. Natural stones, marbles and glass with polished chrome fittings combined with soft bath linens will add an understated luxury to any small bathroom.

7. Showers are perfect for ensuite or small bathrooms. Quadrants and Quintets are specifically designed to save floor space but still provide a roomy shower enclosure. Aqata have an extensive range of shower screens and enclosures ideally suited for small spaces and we also have a comprehensive bespoke service with over 25 years of experience.

8. When room is tight a compact bath with a bath screen is a great way to have it all. Aqata's frameless Spectra SP490 bath screen has a fixed panel and a 180 degree inward folding panel providing an efficient water barrier and deflector.

9. If your small bathroom is an awkward space, has sloping ceiling or an unusual floor layout don't be phased, see it as design opportunity. Aqata has specialised in bespoke made to measure shower enclosures for over 25 years and enjoys maximising the potential of even the most challenging small space.

10. Make it your own, individual, calming relaxing space. Remember it may be small but it can still be beautiful.

A global view from the shower KBB News January 2013

AQATA, one of the UK's leading shower enclosure manufacturers, looks ahead and explores the key shower trends influencing consumers over the next 12 months.
The hottest trends in interiors and product design are currently being driven by three key factors: the global economy, environmental concerns and our ageing population, says AQATA.

The global economy is at best uncertain and at worse gloomy. Here in the UK, we are all affected in some way by job insecurity, pay freezes or rising costs. This mixture of uncertainty combined with the fact that we are working harder to make a good living fuels a yearning for comfort, style and affordable luxury in our homes.

When it comes to bathroom design for 2013, this translates to a look that is contemporary, with products designed for busy 21st century lifestyles that can also adapt to our changing needs. Products that are cost effective and stand the test of time provide a sound investment with a mix of contemporary classic design and innovative ideas. Tangible characteristics like quality materials and good craftsmanship create a sense of luxury and also lasting value.

Environmental concerns manifest themselves in different ways. Even those who remain unconvinced about climate change are generally won over by the argument that we need to manage our natural resources in a sustainable way.

This directly links to the pounds in our pockets as many households are noticing an increase in energy and water bills. As this continues, consumers will look to eco efficient products which make financial sense as they use less water and energy. Products such as reduced flow showers and taps, dual flush toilets and water conservation products are becoming more mainstream and demand is on the increase.

LED lighting, under floor heating and the geothermal technology of tapping into the consistent temperature of the earth are attracting more interest, along with the benefits of bio-degradability and water recycling.

Showering, particularly if using a water-saving shower head, is already far more water efficient than taking a bath. The average sized bath tub 1700 x 700mm holds between 110 and 190 litres of water compared with a standard shower of around 12 litres per minute, which uses approximately 60 litres for a five minute shower, and research and development is well under way to reduce this figure still further.

As the population continues to age, the trend towards improving accessibility will also increase in popularity. According to the Office for National Statistics, the number of multi-generational homes grew by 27% between 2001 and 2010. In addition, housebuilders are creating new homes which cater for the needs of the disabled and older resident, many of whom are Baby Boomers who expect age-friendly features that do not look institutionalised.

Simple design features like low level shower trays and wider shower screen access, baths with wider ledges to double as a seat, stylish fold-down seats in the shower, sensor operated taps and lighting, adjustable WC heights, floating vanity units and wider doorways all improve accessibility without compromising on stunning bathroom design.

Wetrooms offer a universally popular design solution. Whether a tiled wetroom floor, or low level and flush mounted shower tray with wide shower screen, they make a real design statement and provide easy access for all.

Floor space and storage is also very important for an uncluttered luxury look, so frameless shower screens, enclosures and walk-ins and wall hung modular style furniture and sanitary ware will reduce the impact on the floor area visually and together they add to the feeling of space.

Top Tips on Caring for your Shower from AQATA
September 2012. AQATA, the UK shower enclosure manufacturer renowned for its innovation, design and unrivalled customer service, offers a lifetime guarantee on all its high quality glass shower enclosures screens and walk ins. Follow Aqata's advice on caring for your shower to ensure day-to-day enjoyment and keep your shower looking as good as new.

• Remove water remaining on the glass, frame and fittings
• Do not allow lime scale to build up on enclosure
• Polish the glass and framework with Aqata Cleaner weekly
• Do not leave neat cleaning products on the surfaces
• Do not use "spray on and leave" cleaning products
• Ensure cleansers are non-abrasive and between pH4 & 8
• To remove lime scale use 50:50 white vinegar and water
• Ensure vinegar solution is rinsed off & polished dry

AQATA Glass Cleaner costs £5.99 for 200ml (plus P&P)

AQATA also produces an attractive polished chrome Squeegee which is the perfect, caring gift for your shower. Complete with double hook, it retails at £54.00 incl. Vat, and can be positioned on the wall close to the shower so it is always on hand when you need it.

For the ultimate easy-clean shower, all AQATA enclosures, doors and screens can be ordered with ClearShield™ glass protection system. This is factory applied to the inside of the glass and acts just like 'non-stick' cookware, forming a protective barrier. As if by magic, water forms beads and rolls away taking with it most dirt, bacteria and lime scale as the protection treatment makes it hard for this to adhere to the glass. Your shower stays cleaner, and thus more hygienic, for longer. For day-to-day care, all that's needed to keep the glass looking shiny and new is a quick wipe after use with a soft, dry cloth.

ClearShield™ costs just 10% extra and is guaranteed for 8 years, providing that you follow a simple care programme using the Special After-Care solution that is approved for regular use with this product.

CREATE THE PERFECT SHOWER ZONE
Leading UK shower specialist, Aqata, are experts in the design and manufacture of high quality, shower enclosures, plus this leading British company also provides consumers a complete one-stop shop with a wide selection of designer showers, shower trays and bathroom accessories. This all-round experience means Aqata is well-placed to offer valuable planning advice to customers to help them make the most of their space and achieve their perfect shower zone.

Here are some top planning tips from the Aqata team:

1/ Decide what you like about your bathroom and what you would really like to change. Draw a scale plan positioning existing plumbing and services. Consider your priorities for the room, and position fixtures for ease of use and optimum comfort. Allow enough space for each element to work.

2/ Choose quality branded products as opposed to cheaper imports; this will ensure quality and reliable after sales service. For enclosures and screens, glass should be toughened to BS6206A / EN12150-1 and always look for guarantees of quality. At Aqata, the company offers a lifetime guarantee which is unsurpassed in the industry.

3/ When you decide to buy a shower door or shower enclosure there is no substitute for an up close and personal inspection. A quality product should feel solid, and doors should close with a good positive watertight seal. Sliding doors should have a smooth, pleasing action and handles feel sturdy and easy to grip. You can't get this experience from looking at a brochure or a website.

4/ Consider a low level shower tray. Usually low level is about 40mm but Aqata's are 35mm or they can be fitted flush with the floor which not only gives a seamless wet room feel to the space, but is also safe for all ages with no step up into the shower.

5/ Make cleaning your shower screen a breeze by specifying easy clean ClearShield glass. This special treatment causes the water to bead and roll off the glass taking with it any dirt and lime scale residue. You may also consider a specially designed Squeegee for quickly wiping down the glass after use. The Aqata branded model with spare blade and hook is one of the company's best-selling accessories.

6/ Always invest in good ventilation to ensure that humid air can escape and doesn't steam up the room and mist the mirrors.

7/ Discuss your shower preferences before buying. From fixed drench head showers to hand showers which can be freely positioned and are also more convenient for cleaning. Aqata offer a wide choice of two in one solutions with their Linneal designer showers - perfect for all the family.

8/ Aqata recommend thermostatic shower controls with safety cut off valve , approved to TMV2 Standard, to guard against sudden temperature fluctuations and ensure a safe, comfortable shower. Concealed valves look great hiding all the pipework.

9/ All-over etched glass is an attractive alternative to clear and also provides modesty screening. In addition, Aqata's in-house glass etching service offers lots of standard patterns to choose from or you can make your own for a completely original design.

10/ Think about all the elements that will make your bathroom a pleasure to use. Does the lighting enhance the atmosphere? Is the room warm and relaxing? Is there a space for special things you like? Shelves for display plus storage for all your hair and body products, otherwise they'll end up on the floor or balanced on the shower tray.

You can create a real statement with modular wall hung, freestanding, or built-in furniture and shelving and there are a wide range of chrome bathroom accessories to choose from including shelves, towel stackers and essentials like towel rails, toilet roll holders or sponge baskets with all those little finishing touches to make your new bathroom a perfect sanctuary.
